For more than 2 centuries, the Grand Palace has graced the banks of the Chao Phraya River, which is the main artery of Bangkok. The sprawling complex is surrounded on all 4 sides by towering walls and lavish in style, with intricate carved details on almost every surface.

Housing a collection of temples, offices, courtyards, gardens and halls, many are open to the public. The whole area is around 218,000 square meters so wear your walking shoes and bring a hat.
You will want to see Wat Phra Kaew also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (and sometimes referred to as the Temple of the Jade Buddha). This is one of the most important temples in Thailand and a perfect example of Buddhist architecture. Dating back to the 15th century, the Buddha is carved from a single block of jade and dressed with a costume made of gold and precious gems. The Buddha has 3 costumes which are changed by the King each season.
Take a look at two of the earliest buildings, the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall with its grand golden spires and the Phra Maha Montian grand residence which is still used for many state occasions and special ceremonies throughout the year. There is even a miniature version of Angkor Wat in Cambodia – a scale model of the real thing dating back to the days when that part of Cambodia was a vassal state of ancient Siam.
Finally, pop into the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles for a look at historical royal gowns and learn how Thai silk is made.
